Frequently Asked Questions

  • Anyone can qualify with a short interview. Recipients need only be experiencing a short-term heating crisis. Appointments are required in order to pick up a firewood donation.

  • Call or email us to make an appointment. Texting is discouraged.

  • Wood donations can be picked up on Saturdays at the wood bank located on Jill's Lane in Surry at the Meadowbrook Forest. Volunteers are on-hand to help with loading.

  • We rarely deliver, but we will for special circumstances.

  • The Downeast Wood Bank is located on Jill's Lane in Surry on Blue Hill Heritage Trust Land (Meadowbrook Forest).

  • The Downeast Wood Bank is open for pick-ups (appointments are required) most Saturday mornings from the first of October through the end of March, or whenever the wood runs out. We recommend following our Facebook page for real-time updates to our hours.

    Volunteers work year-round.

    Volunteers begin work at 8:30am and pick-ups begin at 9:00am.

  • The Downeast Wood Bank gives a maximum of 1/2 cord of wood per household/family per month.

  • There are multiple ways to help. You can donate money to help operate and procure wood, you can show up and volunteer, you can donate hardwood, or you can donate your wooden crafts to sell online to benefit the wood bank.

  • The Downeast Wood Bank only accepts hardwood donations. The wood can be green or seasoned.

    Wood donations cannot be diseased or rotting; the wood must be in decent condition.

  • The Downeast Wood Bank serves the following towns: Blue Hill, Brooklin, Ellsworth, Sedgwick, Surry, Trenton, and Lamoine.

  • Yes.

  • All work day volunteers must be 18 years of age or older.

  • The Downeast Wood Bank season runs from the beginning of October through the end of March, or whenever the wood runs out.
